September 30, 2011 The Back Rusian cocktail first appeared in 1949  and is attributed to Gustave Tops, a Belgian barman, who created it at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels in honor of Perle Mesta, then U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg. A White Russian Cocktail does not originate from Russian but is named so because of the main ingredient being vodka.  Kahlúa is the brand of coffee liqueur most commonly associated with White Russians but Tia Maria gives a good flavour too.
