Soda Bread and easy to make bread that used bicarbonate of soda as a raiding agent instead of yeast.  Soda Bread is eaten in a number of cuisines including  American, European and Eastern European.

Ingredients (makes one loaf)

450 g (1 lb) plain flourSoda Bread
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda
350 ml (12 fl oz) milk
flour to sprinkle

 

Preheat Oven to 220°C, 425°F, gas 7

Grease a baking tray if you prefer to make rolls.

In a large mixing bowl sift together the flour, cream of tartar, salt and bicarbonate of soda.

Add the milk and knead into a smooth soft dough

Form into a round, place on the baking tray and mark a cross on the top of the dough using a sharp knife

Sprinkle the top with flour and bake in a hot oven for 35 minutes.

Cool before serving

Can be served with any dish you want but is delicious just served with butter.
