Indian Naan Bread an easy to make bread which can be served with curries and soups such as dhal (Lentil Soup).  This recipe has added garlic but you can also add minced onion if you wish.  You can freeze this bread.


1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeastNaan Bread
1 cup warm water
1/4 cup white sugar
3 tablespoons milk
1 egg, beaten
2 teaspoons salt
4 1/2 cups bread flour
2 teaspoons minced garlic (optional)
1/4 cup butter, melted

Sesame seeds to sprinkle (optional)


Dissolve the yeast in warm water in a bowl and leave it to stand for about 10 minutes it should be frothy

Stir in sugar, milk, egg, salt, and flour to make a soft dough.

Knead for 10 minutes on a lightly floured surface.

Lightly oil a bowl and transfer the dough inbto it and cover with a clean damp cloth

Leave the dough to rise for about an hour, it should be doubled in size

Turn the dough onto a board and add the garlic and knead for 5 minutes until the garlic is well dispersed throughout the dough.

Make the small pieces of the dough into balls about the size of a golf  ball, place them onto a tray and allow them to rise again for about 30 minutes

Pre-heat the grill

Roll the balls out into a teardrop shape (quite thinly)

Place naans on grill, and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or until puffy and lightly browned.

Turn over the naans and brush with melted butter and sprinkle with sesame seeds (the sesame seeds are optional)

Then cook this side under the grill for 1 – 2 minutes or until lightly browned

Repeat this process until all the naans are cooked
