Mulled Wine is a traditional Christmas tipple and goes well with Mince Pies.  There are many recipes from all over Europe but all are very similar containing red wine with citrus and spices.

Ingredients

6 clovesMulled Wine
1 whole vanilla pod, halved
2 bottles red wine
2 cinnamon sticks
A little nutmeg fresh or dried
juice of 1 lemon
150g brown sugar
500ml orange juice

Method

Gently heat the wine with the spices and vanilla pod(you can add some of your favourite spices as well if you wish) but do not allow to boil.

Gradually stir in half the sugar, then the orange juice and heat for a few minutes without boiling.

Take off the heat and gradually stir in the vodka and the rest of the sugar you can add more sugar if you want a sweeter drink

Heat the mixture again slowly and leave on the hob at a very low setting for 5 to 10 minutes until all the flavours have infused together.

Remove vanilla pod and serve in glasses with a slice of orange and a stick of cinnamon (Optional)
