Krautesuppe is a Traditional German recipe and is a very tasty soup for winter time.  It is high in Vitamin C.  You can make this soup in bulk as it freezes very well and if you have trouble getting the kids to eat vegetables try blending the soup so they can’t see what’s in it.


4 Slices Bacon; thick — dicedGerman Cabbage Soup
2 Onion — sliced
1 Turnip — sliced
2 Carrots — diced
2 Potatoes — cubed
1 Cabbage, green — shredded
4 Cups Chicken stock
2 Cups Water
6 Parsley sprigs *
1 Bay Leaf *

*Tie these together as you will need to remove them later

1/4 Cup Parmesan — grated to garnish


Combine all the ingredients except the cheese and salt and pepper in a large saucepan

Simmer partially covered for 1½ hours

Remove the parsley and bay

Season to taste

Transfer piping hot into soup bowls then scatter with the Parmesan cheese

Serve with crusty bread
