Cheese Straws are perfect for dipping or on their own and are ideal for parties.  Quick and easy to make they bake in just 15 minutes.  There are many reecipes for cheese straws but this one is tried and tested and always delicious.


100 g (4 oz) Self Raising FlourCheese Straws
pinch of salt
pinch of mustard powder or cayenne pepper
50 g (2 oz) margarine or butter
75 g (3 oz) mature Cheddar or Red Leicester cheese, grated
1 medium egg, beaten


Pre-heat to oven to 180ºC, 350ºF, Gas Mark 4.

Mix together the flour, salt and mustard or cayenne pepper

Rub in the margarine until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs

Stir in the cheese and add enough egg to make a stiff dough

Roll out very thinly and cut into strips

Twist the strips and place on a greased baking tray

Bake for 10 to 15 minutes
